Sony has just launched ZV-1, a camera made specially for vloggers and video shooters. It has similar specs and build as the Sony's own RX100 series of cameras. Specs-wise, ZV-1 is almost the same as the DSC-RX100M5A. Check out the specs comparisons, differences, pros, and cons below.
What's common?
What's common?
- 1 inch stacked CMOS sensor
- Same battery
- Eye-AF feature ( older RX100 variants do not support this )
- 4K @ 30fps maximum
- ND Filter ( latest RX100 models do not have this, but older ones do )
- Steadyshot
Sony ZV-1 comes with a flip-out, fully articulating screen which is not seen on any RX100 or Sony Alpha series cameras. There is also an MI ( Multi-interface ) shoe placed conveniently to the side, with which you can add a pro mic or a flash to create a more professional setup.
Sony is also introducing a product showcase Autofocus mode in the ZV-1. This works really well and will come in handy during unboxing videos. RX100 series do not have this in any of the variants.
Which one to choose if you are just interested in Stills photography?
I would go for the latest RX100 variants instead of the ZV-1 mainly due to the presence of the built-in EVF. During sunny conditions, it's great to have an EVF to compose shots instead of relying on the LCD screen. However, some of those older RX variants do not support Eye-AF we see on the ZV-1. For eg, RX100M5A which comes with a similar F1.8 - F2.8 lens as the ZV-1 does not support Eye-AF.
If you are into video, then ZV-1 is a much better choice. That flip-out screen would really help you to shoot at any angle you like, which is not always possible with the RX100.
