Sony's A7S series is known for its low light Video capture and was once the go-to camera to shoot high-quality 4K videos in challenging lighting conditions. It can see in the Dark and perform better than any other similarly priced cameras in high ISO conditions. A7S2 ( ILCE-7SM2 ) has been out for a while now, and A7S3 / ILCE-7SM3 is long overdue. What's stopping Sony from bringing its flagship video-centric mirrorless camera to the market?
If you look at recently launched Sony bodies like the A9 Mark 2, A7R3 Mark 4, APS-C flagship A6600, you would notice one major feature missing on all those bodies. None of these cameras can shoot 4K at 60fps. While every major camera manufacturer is launching new bodies with 60fps 4K, for some reason Sony is not able to launch one with it. It's a curious case. Maybe there is some technical issue Sony is facing with the technology they have, that is stopping them from implementing this feature.
Sony's recently launched FX9 - a high end full-frame 6K sensor camcorder camera - actually can't shoot Full-frame 4K 60p/50p recording with oversampling yet. It will be available through a firmware update in the future though. It was so surprising to see Sony launch a brand new Video camera without the main feature, it clearly shows there is something very wrong with their implementation of 4K 60p.
They better be ready. Canon has just announced their next flagship mirrorless camera - Canon EOS R5. It will come with some insane Video recording features like 8K @ 30fps with full sensor readout and 4K @ 120fps. If Sony can't push out A7S3 without an 8K option in 2020, a lot of people waiting for this would jump ship and go for the EOS R5 instead. Let's wait and see.
