Honor 9X has that big 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor which by default shoots Pixel binned 12MP files. The dynamic range is quite good in both 48MP and 12MP modes, but the image quality, in my opinion, is just ok.
So, I thought about shooting DNG RAW files of that 48MP sensor to get the best quality out of 9X. However, that's currently impossible to achieve.
Honor 9X and it's predecessors like 8X, 7X, 6X etc ships with EMUI Lite version. Huawei normally doesn't mention that on the box or you wouldn't notice that while using the phone mainly because there is hardly any noticeable difference between the full EMUI and the lite EMUI.
However, the Lite version does not allow RAW capture in the default camera app. Pro mode is available, but there is no option to toggle raw. One other difference you would notice is that the night mode and light painting modes are locked at 8MPI remember rooting my old Honor 6X and changing a line in an XML file to disable EMUI Lite mode, thus enabling raw capture. Since we can't root 9X, it is not currently possible to do such a hack.
The only app currently available that lets you shoot DNG is Freedcam. However, the raw files out of that are in a corrupted state. Lightroom mobile camera does not even detect the 48MP sensor, instead, it uses 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens as the main camera. Strangely, Huawei is allowing DNG raw capture with the ultra-wide-angle lens ( use any third part Pro app ).
I have emailed Freedcam developer with needed sample Bayer files out of the 9X for inspection. If he finds a way to shoot dng out of the 48MP sensor on the 9X, I will surely update this post when more information is available.
