When Andy Rubin founded the company Essential, a lot of tech enthusiasts and Android fanboys were really excited and expected big things from them. After all, this is a company made by the guy who created Android.
However, they only released just one phone - the Essential PH-1 and in a blog post today announced they are shutting down the company for the good - "We have made the difficult decision to cease operations and shutdown Essential".
To be honest, we all saw this coming. Many in the tech industry already thought the Essential Phone company is Dead when no new smartphones from them surfaced. The 2nd phone from them was canceled as well.
Then, in October 2019, out of the blue, Andy Rubin tweeted about a new Essential phone - Project Gem. "We've been working on a new device to reframe your perspective on mobile".This new phone had a different look to the rest of the smartphone launching left and right in the market.
The blog post reads "Our vision was to invent a mobile computing paradigm that more seamlessly integrated with people’s lifestyle needs. Despite our best efforts, we’ve now taken Gem as far as we can and regrettably have no clear path to deliver it to customers."
RIP Essential. You won't be missed.
