Honor 9X Global variant will soon be launching in India in coming weeks. It will ship with Google Apps unlike other new Huawei / Honor mobiles as the 9X was announced a while back before the Huawei ban.
Honor 9X's main highlight feature is it's Triple Camera setup at the back. It comes with a 48MP F1.8 main sensor and a 8MP ultra wide angle sensor. There is also a 2MP depth sensor for Bokeh / Aperture Mode / Portrait shots.
So how good is the Honor 9X camera ?
Even though the sensor is a 48MP one, the recommended shooting mode is 12MP. In that setting, you get a 4-in-1 Super Pixel mode resulting in better image quality and details. Also, the file size is much smaller than the default 48MP jpg file size.
The image quality out of the 12MP photos is quite good. Dynamic range is fine as well. However, the 8MP Ultra wide angle lens, even though is fun to use, the image quality is quite bad. Ultra wide angle do not come with an Auto Focus lens as well.
Since this is a phone in the budget Honor X Series, the Pro model on the 9X do not come with Dng RAW shooting support. You can use third party Camera apps to shoot raw, however, for some reason, only the ultra wide angle 8MP has raw support and the 48MP doesn't.
Like every other Huawei phone, the default camera app is filled with a lot of features and creative modes. These help you create some great looking, instagram worthy shots.
However, some of these features are not 'Full' versions we see on more expensive Honor devices. The aperture mode, light painting modes and night mode are stuck on 8MP even though it uses the 48MP sensor to shoot.
Aperture mode is, in my opinion a great feature to have, as you can adjust the blur after taking a shot. Unlike Portrait mode, it works on all subjects, not just humans.
Night mode is quite good as well. However, it's not that good compared it's older flagship Honor 10's night mode.
In the default Photo mode, you can enable or disable AI mode. I like to leave it OFF and boost colors myself on Snapseed or Lightroom Mobile.
All in all, Honor 9X has a good 48MP sensor camera, and the image quality is quite good for a budget phone. Ultra wide angle is an awesome tool to get some great perspective - but just don't Pixel peep.
