Sony's RX100 series of cameras are compact high end point & shoot systems with a big 1 inch sensor. The reason why the sensor is called BIG is because almost all other cameras this size come with a much smaller sensor. Bigger the sensor, better the image quality is. So you get much better images out of RX100 comparing to your other similar sized point & shoot cameras.
Sony RX100 series are now at 7th generation ( RX100VII ). However, every other generation of RX100 cameras are still available and sold in the market. Even though this is the 7th generation, Sony has actually pushed out 8 cameras. The odd one out in the lineup is DSC-RX100M5A.
During the early days of RX100 series, Sony used to equip the camera with Fast F1.8 lens and a smaller focal length - typically 24-70mm focal length. As years passed by, Mobile Camera sensors got better and many new phones start to ship with multiple focal length cameras on the back. So Sony, in order to stand out, switched to a longer zoom range lens system, resulting in a smaller aperture. Sony RX100 M6 came with 8x Optical zoom and an F2.8 - 4.5 aperture lens. RX100 M6 came with a lot of new features that was missing on the older M5 which has a faster F1.8 lens on. The newer gen had a faster Bionz X processor as well as Auto Focus and Buffer improvements. Smart guys at Sony decided to push out another variant with many of these features of M6 but with fast lens of the M5. Thus DSC-RX100M5A was born.
Sony is no longer producing RX100 M5, but you would still be able to get it from many markets. RX100 M5 was replaced by M5A.
